With the Film Festival Still Dark, Downtown Napa's November Nights Belong to Two Stages

November 5, 2026

For most of the last decade, November in downtown Napa meant the Napa Valley Film Festival. The 2019 edition ran five days, November 13 through 17. In November 2026 there is no festival again. Downtown evenings this season run mostly through two historic rooms, the Uptown Theatre and the newly renamed Napa Music Hall, and one Napa native owns both buildings.

That swaps a once-a-year event for a weekly habit. A festival filled downtown for five nights. The venues are built to fill it hundreds of nights a year, and their owner has said so.

How the November slot opened up

The festival changed form gradually. Cinema Napa Valley held its 2021 festival online from November 10 to 14, with streaming films and filmmaker conversations. In May 2022 the organization said the previous two years had been hard on live events. It announced a year-round model built with community partners CIA at Copia, Ackerman Family Vineyards and Cameo Cinema.

Then came November 2023. The Press Democrat reported that the festival set for that weekend was being postponed to April 2024. The SAG-AFTRA strike kept actors from promoting their work, so organizers could not line up celebrity guests, and that made sponsor commitments difficult. What arrived in spring 2024 was the Salute to Culinary Cinema, April 5 to 7, billed as four films and four culinary tributes and presented with CIA at Copia.

The Cinema Napa Valley homepage now promises a "Relaunch Event" for fall/winter 2026/27 and says "The Festival Returns" in 2027. Monica Halpert is listed as executive director and Richard A. Garber as board chairman. The site is asking for founding sponsors and supporters to make the relaunch possible.

One owner, two stages, about 1,730 seats

The music grew in the years the festival shrank. A Press Democrat profile published October 28 follows John Truchard, a Vintage High School graduate who started JaM Cellars with his wife, Michele, in 2008. JaM opened a small tasting room on First Street after releasing its first cabernet sauvignon in 2009. A year later the Truchards began hosting live music and DJ sessions there several nights a week.

The buildings came later. According to the Press Democrat, the Truchards bought the circa-1880 Napa Valley Opera House in 2021. In 2022, Uptown Theatre owner Georga Altamura sold that venue to Truchard for $12.15 million. Blue Note Napa's lease at the Opera House ended in January 2026. Truchard then took over operations himself, spent three months revamping the two-stage space and reopened it in April as Napa Music Hall. The old downstairs Blue Note room is now The Club. The upstairs theater, once branded the JaM Cellars Ballroom under a sponsorship, is now The Ballroom. The profile also reports that he recently bought Matrix, the cocktail lounge next to the Andaz that often books live music.

These numbers show how big a calendar the venues can carry. The Press Democrat puts the Uptown at roughly 860 seats and Napa Music Hall at about 870 across its two stages, with room for 60 more at the JaM Cellars tasting room. Truchard told the paper that 100,000 tickets a year is "eminently attainable."

"Even if we don't sell out, if we can get to the point where our venues host 300 shows a year, we'll be doing it right."

He said that to the Press Democrat. Compare 300 shows to the film festival's five days, the event that once defined November downtown.

Why a stage calendar changes the rest of the evening

According to the Press Democrat, people who come for a concert often have dinner at a local restaurant first, a drink at a local bar afterward, or both. The city doesn't track the economic effect of music events. Even so, Napa Chamber of Commerce executive director Jeri Hanson told the paper the spillover benefits are a boon: "At the end of the day it's about economic development and supporting our community through investment."

BottleRock partner Dave Graham described the same pattern across the year. In the Press Democrat piece he said BottleRock creates "a burst of energy each Memorial Day weekend," with roughly 45,000 people attending per day, and that the Uptown and Napa Music Hall "help sustain that excitement throughout the year." JaM Cellars ended its run as BottleRock's presenting sponsor in 2025, after a deal that began with the 2016 festival. The year-round venues are where Truchard's money in Napa music now goes.

The Uptown also runs a Wednesday Movie Night series: The Big Lebowski opened November on the 4th, and Pulp Fiction is on November 18.

The civic dates that frame it

The city still marks the season. City of Napa Parks and Recreation hosts Día de los Muertos, which Visit Napa Valley lists for Saturday, November 7. DoNapa describes it as a family-friendly celebration of community through art, tradition, music, dance and food. The Christmas Parade on December 5 is the 61st, and this year's theme is "Joy to the World and Peace on Earth." Participants assemble at 3 p.m. The route starts at Second and School streets, turns south on Brown and comes back west on Third, with judging on Third near Coombs. The parade is canceled if the weather turns bad, and afterward Santa will be at the Napa Valley Welcome Center in First Street Napa.

A few other dates fill out the stretch around Thanksgiving. Merry Meritage opens its outdoor ice rink November 19 and keeps it open through January 3, with Thanksgiving Day hours of 2 to 10 p.m. Its tree lighting is November 21 from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 40-foot tree, live music and family activities. Olive & Hay is serving a $115 family-style Thanksgiving dinner on November 26. Azur Wine Lounge holds its fourth annual Clinton District Christmas Market on Friday, December 4, from 4 to 8 p.m., and adds a second ornament workshop on December 10. The morning after the parade, First Street Napa's Makers Market Outdoor with Santa runs from noon to 1 p.m. on December 6.

After the holidays, the free Napa Lighted Art Festival takes over downtown from January 16 to February 14, 2027, with projection art on three buildings during its first nine nights.

One new name to try between events is at Oxbow Public Market, 610 First St. The Napa Valley Register reports Roman Holiday Gelato among its recent vendors, with owner and chef Elisha Smiley.

The downtown the festival comes back to

Truchard described his venues to the Press Democrat as part of a larger whole: "I like to think of music and art and culture as the third leg of a stool. We've always had great wine. Then with the likes of Thomas Keller and other chefs we got incredible food. Now, with BottleRock and some of these other venues, we've got amazing music." BottleRock partner Jason Scoggins told the paper that Truchard is "investing in Napa's cultural future."

When Cinema Napa Valley brings back what its site calls "screenings, filmmakers, conversations, culinary experiences and signature events across the valley" in 2027, it will share downtown with stages that hold about 1,730 seats and are built for a year-round schedule. The November when one festival defined downtown Napa came before the 1880 Opera House reopened as Napa Music Hall in April 2026.

The Opera House went from leased jazz club to owner-run music hall in three months, after a single lease expired.
